One of the first things we realised at Northern Dough Co HQ, is that making pizza is a lot of fun. We’ve yet to come across two people who like their pizza exactly the same, even if its just down to whether its two spoons of sauce or three over the freshly rolled out base. So, rather than spending Saturday morning cleaning the house or paying the bills, this weekend we asked some very discerning foodies what their favourite pizza toppings were, and then got cracking with making them in time for lunch.
Alfie, 10, and Beatrice, 6 (the discerning foodies in question) were pretty definitive on what made their perfect pizza. Even before the rolling pin hit the worktop, Alfie had set out his stall with a bold declaration of ‘I don’t like normal pizza’.
Thankfully, he quickly followed up with ‘but I’m going to put Nutella and chocolate on mine with Smarties and caramel sauce’ and secretly we were very pleased (as long as he was willing to share). So we rolled, and we topped, and we spread Nutella all over the base (being careful to make sure lots went on our hands so we could lick it all off while the pizza was in the oven) and then sprinkled with various chocolately treats.
The result was a gooey, sticky dessert pizza that tasted as delicious as it looked, and of course a very happy Alfie. Bea felt it would have benefitted from a sprinkling of pink glitter, but Alfie (politely of course) declined.
Bea’s own pizza, on the other hand, due to her much more ambitious palate was topped with olives, ham, mushrooms and copious amounts of tomato sauce, all arranged delicately in the shape of a face. Carefully placing all the toppings until it looked like a work of art, she then bit straight into her new friend as soon as he’d cooled enough from the oven.
With flour still on our noses, we cleared up the kitchen and headed out for an afternoon stroll in the park with dog Charlie to walk it all off. Yum!
